If I Urinate in Public, Will I Need to Register as a Sex Offender?

Urinating in Public in North Carolina

Some years ago, an urban legend started circulating among college campus’ that if you were caught peeing in public, you could be forced to register as a sex offender. Thankfully for those of you who refuse to wait in the porta potty line, this is not true. At least, not in North Carolina.

Urinating in Public is a local ordinance (Sec. 13-3013) that is punished as a misdemeanor if you are convicted. Of the range of punishments available to a judge sentencing you, none of them include the requirement that you register as a sex offender. Now, if you unzip your fly/lift your kilt/drop “trou” in front of another person, you could be looking at a charge for Indecent Exposure. If that happens, call me.
