For over forty-five years, Hatch, Little & Bunn, LLP has successfully provided North Carolina Triangle residents with a wide variety of services related to personal estate planning. Managing an individual's estate is a significant responsibility and requires an investment of time, energy and understanding of estate administration. Successful estate administration requires effective and efficient settlement of an estate and protection of its assets. From simple wills to complex family business succession plans, Hatch, Little & Bunn, LLP is proud of our role as counselor, confidant and advisor.

Our team of attorneys and legal professionals represent a wide range of disciplines to bring multiple perspectives to your situation. In addition to Estate Administration, our practice areas include Bankruptcy & Collections, Corporate Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, Landlord/Tenant Law, Municipal/Zoning Law, Environmental Law, Personal Injury, Municipal/Public Utilities Law, and Real Estate.

An estate is the total property owned by a deceased individual. Among other things, administration of a decedent's estate involves probating the estate, inventorying and appraising the decedent's assets, calculating and paying estate taxes, and distributing remaining assets. The deceased's Personal Representative is required to file yearly accountings, identifying all property received and distributed. These accountings are carefully audited by the County Estates Division. As your probate and estate administration attorney, we settle the affairs of the deceased whether a will is in place or one does not exist. We can help:
  • Determine the value of assets including recommending and working with an appraiser,
  • Publish and file notice to creditors within the required timeframe,
  • Assist in identifying estate liabilities advising on the priority of payment,
  • Transfer title to beneficiaries,
  • Create and fund trusts in compliance with the terms of the governing document or law,
  • Ensure that taxes and estate expenses are minimized, and
  • Ensure compliance with estate administration requirements.

Hatch, Little & Bunn, LLP also counsels trustees, conservators and personal representatives ("fiduciaries") in trust and estate administration, and advises beneficiaries who need guidance or representation in issues related to a fiduciary's actions. Our attorneys have successfully defended clients in situations where fiduciaries have had to defend themselves against suits filed by unhappy beneficiaries.

Whether we serve as the fiduciary, represent the fiduciary or a beneficiary, creditor or other party, our knowledge and experience in all aspects of the estate administration will cost-effectively protect your rights. If you have been tasked with estate administration, it is strongly recommended that you seek the advice of qualified legal counsel to assist you. Incorrect administration of an estate may result in a lawsuit being filed by dissatisfied family members or the administrator being held in contempt of court. Hatch, Little & Bunn, LLP will provide sensitive and proactive support in estate settlement and administration. Please contact us today at (919) 856-3940 or via our online contact form.
